Hi there! Thank you for providing me the opportunity to introduce myself. I am Satish Maharjan, and I work as a consultant at 4Pillars Environmental Consulting.
Coming from the laps of the Himalayas, a place where the diversity of flora and fauna is matched by the beauty the natural landscape provides. Every time I packed my bags and travelled to one of the masterpieces of nature, I am utterly amazed by the grandeur, splender and power. The moment when you break the upperpart of the valleys, and you get the first view of the whole mountain range, its sublime beauty knocks you in a way which words cannot express.
Having lived and completed dozens of treks through this pristine and naturally gifted land it’s no wonder how one’s love and passion would lean towards nature. Having said this, the choice to study Environment science was a no brainer for me. I did my undergraduate studies in Environmental Science from Kathmandu University in Nepal.
Since completing my Bachelors, I was fortunate to work as an Environmental consultant where I got to conduct environmental impact studies for Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport of Nepal. These were road projects implemented in order to improve existing roads and enhance accessibility mong major settlements to district headquarters and major highways in Nepal. I have also worked in providing management plans to ensure implementation and monitoring of mitigation measures to minimise adverse impacts and maximize beneficial impacts. I enjoy helping clients to comply with environment regulations and policies. Ultimately ensuring that biophysical as well as cultural impacts of the development are mitigated, resulting in a positive outcome for the client and environment.
Along with this I also worked as a research associate for Kathmandu University, Nepal, along with WWF. In this role, I conducted study in the Gandaki river of central Nepal to test the prevailing hypothesis concerning stream fish response to climate change. This project was to help safeguard the future of Nepal’s aquatic biodiversity, ensuring availability of the important natural resources for future generations as climate change is already affecting the lives of people living in remote parts of the country.
To pursue my career further in the environmental industry, I moved to Australia in 2017 and finished my postgraduate studies in Environment from Macquarie University, Sydney. After completing my degree, I was pleased to be welcomed in 4Pillars team, whose values align close to mine. I am also inclined towards providing pragmatic options and innovative solutions. I was excited not only to bring my skills and experience to this position but it was an opportunity to broaden my knowledge. Since joining 4Pillars I have really enjoyed the array of work involving air, water and noise monitoring and management, compliance reporting, regulatory and community engagement, assist client to do approvals and impact assessments. In this time, I have gained further exposure other sectors like civil construction, waste, and resource recovery.
Apart from this, I have passion for painting and fine arts. I do lots of portraiture and landscapes. My go to medium is watercolour, which is the magic medium. These days I have also been working with pen and ink as well. You can follow me on Instagram at satish_maharjan to check some of my works (please like and subscribe!). I am also a big sports fanatic and always find time to talk about football and basketball. I don’t miss a game when Chelsea or the Warriors are playing. My favourite movie and books change every 3 months but if I have to pick a movie which I could watch over and over again, it would to be Princes Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki and book which I have enjoyed couple of times is Lifetide by Lyall Watson.
